Overview
Visio Professional is the diagramming standard in most corporate environments, and the Professional edition's differentiator is data linking: connect shapes to an Excel sheet or database and the diagram updates as the data does. For network maps or asset diagrams that go stale within weeks, that is the whole point.
It is Windows desktop only, and a perpetual licence covers one machine. If you need several people editing the same diagram in a browser, the Visio Plan subscriptions are the route — this edition is for one person producing definitive drawings.

Who the Microsoft Visio Professional 2024 is for
IT teams, engineers and analysts on Windows who produce network diagrams, process maps or floor plans and want to own the tool outright.
Common problems and how to fix them
Colleagues cannot open .vsdx files
Use the free Visio Viewer, or share a PDF. Files stored in OneDrive or SharePoint can also be viewed in a browser without a licence, which is usually the least friction for reviewers.
Data-linked shapes stopped updating
The link breaks when the source file moves or is renamed. Re-link the data source, and keep the source in a fixed location such as a SharePoint library rather than a local Downloads folder.
A stencil you need is missing
Many vendor stencils — for switches, racks and specific hardware — are published by the vendors themselves rather than bundled. Download the .vss or .vssx file and drop it in your My Shapes folder.
Frequently asked questions
Is Visio part of Microsoft 365?
No. Visio is licensed separately, either as this perpetual edition or as a Visio Plan subscription.
What does Professional add over Standard?
Data-linked diagrams, more advanced templates such as detailed network and engineering diagrams, and broader standards support.
Can Mac users open Visio files?
Not in a desktop app — there is no Visio for Mac. They can view files in a browser through Microsoft 365 or work from an exported PDF.
