Overview

Project Professional is the desktop scheduling tool that has anchored construction, engineering and IT programme planning for decades. Critical path, resource levelling, baselines and variance reporting are all here, and the perpetual licence means the tool does not stop working when a subscription lapses.

What the desktop edition does not do is collaborate. There is no shared web workspace, no assignment notifications, no portfolio roll-up across teams — those live in the Project Plan subscriptions. If more than one person needs to update the same plan, price those instead.

Who the Microsoft Project Professional 2024 is for

Individual project managers who build and maintain detailed schedules on Windows and do not need cloud collaboration.

Common problems and how to fix them

Colleagues cannot open your .mpp file

Project files need Project to open them. Share a PDF or exported Excel view for stakeholders, or export the timeline as an image. Free viewers exist but handle complex plans inconsistently.

Tasks move unexpectedly when you change a date

That is usually automatic scheduling doing what it is told through your dependencies and constraints. Check the task's constraint type — 'Must Start On' and similar hard constraints fight the scheduler and produce the strangest results.

Resource levelling produces an unusable schedule

Level a copy, never the live plan. Set priorities before levelling and restrict the range, otherwise the algorithm optimises for resource conflicts alone and ignores what matters to your delivery dates.

Frequently asked questions

Is Project included in Microsoft 365?

No. Project is always licensed separately, whether perpetual or as a Project Plan subscription.

Does it run on a Mac?

No. Project Professional is Windows-only. Mac users generally use a web-based Project Plan subscription or a third-party tool.

What is the difference from Project Plan 3?

Plan 3 is a subscription that adds cloud collaboration, web access and portfolio features. The perpetual edition is desktop-only for one person.
