Overview
This is the edition for people who want Office to be a thing they own rather than a thing they rent. You pay once, install on one machine, and it keeps working — no renewal date, no account lapse, no feature that disappears when a card expires.
The trade-off is that it stays as it is. You get security fixes but not new features, and when the support window closes the sensible move is to upgrade. Note the naming too: Microsoft now markets this line as Office Home 2024, having used the Home & Student label through the 2021 release.

Students and households who want Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one computer and would rather not pay every year.
Common problems and how to fix them
'This product key has already been used'
A perpetual retail key binds to the Microsoft account that redeems it. Sign in at the Microsoft account services page and check whether it is already listed there — if it is, install from that account instead of re-entering the key. A key resold second-hand often fails here.
Installation fails or stalls partway
Remove any older Office version first, then run Microsoft's Support and Recovery Assistant, which diagnoses and cleans up broken installs. Mixing a 32-bit and 64-bit Office on one machine is the most common blocker.
Apps open in read-only or reduced functionality mode
That means activation has not completed. Open any Office app, go to File then Account, and sign in with the account that holds the licence. If it still will not activate, check the machine's date and time — a wrong clock breaks the activation handshake.
Frequently asked questions
Does Office 2024 Home & Student include Outlook?
No. Word, Excel and PowerPoint only. Outlook comes with the Home & Business edition or with Microsoft 365.
Is it a subscription?
No. It is a one-time purchase licensed to one device, with no renewal.
Can I move it to a new computer?
A retail licence can generally be transferred once you uninstall it from the old machine. A licence pre-installed by a PC manufacturer is tied to that hardware.
