Overview
Microsoft 365 Personal is the subscription for one person across all their devices. The apps stay current rather than frozen at a version, and 1 TB of OneDrive is included — which is most of the value if you were paying for cloud storage separately anyway.
The device rule is the part people misread. It is not one device: you can install on as many as you like and be signed in on five at once. What you cannot do is share it with another person — that is what the Family plan exists for.

Common problems and how to fix them
'You have reached the device limit'
Sign out of an old device from your Microsoft account's Services and subscriptions page — it can be done remotely, which matters when the device in question was sold or replaced.
OneDrive says storage is full despite the 1 TB
Check whether the subscription is actually active and applied to the account you are signed into OneDrive with. If it lapsed, the quota drops back to the free tier and syncing stops until you are under it again.
Apps reverted to read-only after payment failed
Update the payment method in your Microsoft account and the licence restores itself in minutes. Files are never deleted for non-payment — you keep read access, so nothing is lost while you sort it out.
Frequently asked questions
How many devices can I install Microsoft 365 Personal on?
Install on as many as you want, and stay signed in on up to five at a time.
What happens if I stop paying?
The apps drop to read-only and OneDrive returns to the free storage tier. Your documents remain yours and are not deleted.
Is it better value than a one-time purchase?
It depends on the time frame. Over four or five years a perpetual licence often costs less, but you get no new features and no 1 TB of storage.
