Overview

AntiVirus Plus is the smallest Norton plan, and it is best understood by what it leaves out. You get the same detection engine as the bigger Norton products, a two-way firewall and a password manager, on one device. What you do not get is the Secure VPN, dark web monitoring or parental controls — those start at Norton 360 Standard and Deluxe.

That makes it a sensible pick for a single machine where you already have a VPN, or none is wanted. If you are protecting a household of phones, tablets and laptops, the per-device maths stops working quickly and a 360 Deluxe licence covers five devices for less than five copies of this.

Who the Norton AntiVirus Plus is for

One Windows PC or Mac that needs solid malware protection and a firewall, without paying for VPN and identity features that would go unused.

Common problems and how to fix them

Norton will not install alongside another antivirus

Two real-time scanners fight for the same file hooks and neither ends up working properly. Remove the old product with its own vendor removal tool before installing Norton — Windows Add/Remove Programs regularly leaves drivers behind. Windows Defender steps aside automatically, so it needs no action.

The computer feels slow after installation

The first full scan after install is heavy by design and settles down once it completes. If it stays slow, open the Performance section and check Startup Manager, then schedule scans for a time you are not using the machine. Idle-time scanning is on by default and should not fire while you are working.

You want to remove Norton completely

Use Norton's own Remove and Reinstall tool rather than the standard uninstaller. Standard removal leaves filter drivers in place, which is the usual reason a replacement antivirus refuses to install afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Does Norton AntiVirus Plus include a VPN?

No. Secure VPN is part of the Norton 360 plans. AntiVirus Plus covers malware protection, firewall, password manager and 2 GB of cloud backup.

How many devices does it cover?

One PC or Mac. For multiple devices, Norton 360 Deluxe covers five.

Will it stop Windows Defender from running?

Yes, and that is expected. Windows automatically disables Defender's real-time protection when another registered antivirus takes over, so the two do not conflict.
